Mentos in coke experiment

This week we’ve been learning about how to write a scientific report so I thought I’d try this one at home to practise writing up findings.

Scientific Report

AIM: What happens when you put mentos in a full bottle of coke?

HYPOTHESIS: The mentos will react with the cola causing an eruption of cola.

MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT:

  • 1 bottle of coke
  • 2 mentos
  • a ruler
  • paper towel

METHOD:

  1. Open cola
  2. Drop mentos in
  3. stand back and watch

* Tip – do this outside

Here’s a video I made…

RESULTS:

  • The coke erupted for about 12 seconds.
  • There was 600ml before the mentos was added.
  • At the end of the eruption the coke measured 12cm height in the bottle. When we poured this out, it measured 400ml.
  • The eruption caused 200ml of coke to spill out of the bottle.

CONCLUSION:

They eruption caused a loss in volume and a cool explosion. We looked up why this would happen. Here’s what we found:

the Mentos candy provides a rough surface that allows the bonds between the carbon dioxide gas and water to break more easily, helping to create carbon dioxide bubbles. Because Mentos candies are rather dense, they sink rapidly through the liquid, causing a fast, large eruption.
